“It Is Finished — But the Enemy Still Tries to Unfinish It”
Central Scripture
John 19:30 KJV
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Mission Statement
To help believers recognize how the enemy works to undo faith in what Christ has already completed, and to strengthen their confidence in the finished work of the Cross — living daily in freedom, identity, peace, and victory.
I. The Victory Declared: “It Is Finished”
Scripture: Colossians 2:15
“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”
When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” it was not a cry of defeat but a shout of eternal triumph.
On the Cross, He canceled every record of debt that stood against us, disarmed every demonic authority, and publicly shamed the kingdom of darkness.
The enemy was rendered powerless; his claim over humanity was broken. The words “It is finished” in Greek — tetelestai — mean “paid in full.”
Every sin, curse, and spiritual chain was settled once and for all. There is nothing left for humanity to add; no sacrifice, no ritual, no human effort can improve what Christ already perfected.
Expanded Life Lesson
The Cross isn’t a starting line for you to earn God’s love — it’s the finish line proving you already have it.
You don’t fight for victory; you fight from victory.
The enemy trembles not because you’re strong, but because the work that saves you is complete.
II. The Enemy’s Strategy: To Make You Doubt What’s Finished
Scripture: Genesis 3:1
“Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field… and he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said…?”
The enemy’s oldest tactic is to plant seeds of doubt about what God already declared.
Just as he deceived Eve with “Did God really say?” he whispers similar questions into your mind today:
“Are you really forgiven?”
“Has God really changed you?”
“Are you truly free?”
His strategy hasn’t changed because it still works on hearts that forget the Cross.
If Satan can’t take away your salvation, he’ll work to make you question it so you live bound by guilt and unbelief.
Every time you question whether God still loves you or whether grace still covers you, you’re entertaining the same doubt that began in Eden.
Expanded Life Lesson
When you doubt what Jesus finished, you give power to what He already defeated.
Don’t let momentary feelings define eternal truth.
The Cross is evidence that God meant what He said — your redemption is secure.
III. The Battle Over Identity: You Are Who God Says You Are
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
The enemy tries to “unfinish” the Cross by attacking your identity.
He wants you to believe you’re still the same person you were before grace found you. He’ll bring up your past, your failures, and your shame to make you forget who you’ve become in Christ.
But Scripture declares that when you came to Jesus, the old you died — you were made new.
God no longer sees you through the lens of your mistakes; He sees you through the righteousness of His Son.
Your identity is no longer a prisoner of sin but a child of God, sealed and redeemed.
Expanded Life Lesson
You don’t have to find your worth — you already have it in Christ.
The devil wants to define you by what you’ve done; God defines you by what Jesus finished.
Don’t rehearse your past when God has already rewritten your story.
IV. The Battle Over Freedom: Don’t Rebuild What God Tore Down
Scripture: Galatians 5:1
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
The Cross broke the yoke of sin, shame, and spiritual slavery — yet the enemy constantly tempts believers to return to what once enslaved them.
He whispers lies that say:
“You’ll never change.”
“You’ll always struggle.”
The moment we start to believe those lies, we begin rebuilding the prisons Jesus already demolished.
The Apostle Paul warns us not to be entangled again with bondage, meaning we should not live as captives to habits, guilt, or condemnation that the Cross already conquered.
True freedom is not just being set free — it’s refusing to walk back into chains that no longer exist.
Expanded Life Lesson
Every time you choose guilt over grace, or fear over faith, you’re putting bricks back on a wall Jesus already tore down.
Your job is not to earn freedom; your job is to live in it.
V. The Battle Over Peace: Christ Finished the War Between You and God
Scripture: Romans 5:1
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Before the Cross, humanity was at war with God — separated by sin, driven by rebellion, and condemned under the law.
But Jesus’ sacrifice ended that war once and for all.
Through faith, we are justified — declared righteous — and made at peace with God.
The enemy, however, thrives in internal chaos. He tries to rob you of peace by reminding you of failures or magnifying your fears.
He wants you to think God is still angry or distant.
But the truth is, the Cross brought permanent reconciliation.
Peace with God is not a feeling; it’s a fact sealed in blood.
Expanded Life Lesson
Don’t let temporary turmoil make you forget eternal peace.
The Cross didn’t just quiet your conscience — it changed your standing.
You’re not God’s enemy; you’re His beloved.
Walk in that peace.
VI. The Victory to Walk In: Living Out the Finished Work
Scripture: Philippians 1:6
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
The finished work of Christ on the Cross guarantees the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in your life.
Jesus completed redemption; now the Spirit applies that redemption daily, transforming you into His image.
The enemy will try to convince you that you’ve failed too much for God to finish His work in you, but Scripture says otherwise — what God begins, He always completes.
Sanctification is not about striving; it’s about surrendering to the process of grace.
You are not unfinished; you are in progress under the hand of a faithful God.
Expanded Life Lesson
You don’t have to fear falling short when you’re walking with the One who finishes what He starts.
The same Cross that saved you is the same power that sustains you.
Victory isn’t something you chase; it’s something you carry.
Closing Exhortation
Every time the enemy whispers, “You’re still guilty,” remember that Jesus said, “It is finished.”
Every time shame tries to speak, remember that the blood already answered it.
The Cross is not an invitation to work harder — it’s a declaration that the work is done.
The enemy can’t undo Calvary; he can only distract you from believing it.
Stand firm. The victory is sealed, and the Cross was enough.
Closing Scripture
Hebrews 10:14 NIV
“For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for declaring “It is finished.”
Help us to walk in what You have already secured — freedom, peace, and identity.
Silence the lies that try to undo what You’ve completed.
Remind us daily that Your Cross was enough, Your grace is sufficient, and Your victory is eternal.
In The Mighty Name of Jesus, Amen.
